Background:
Since 2004, CIDT has been trying to develop an electronic library with Egyptian IT personnel because there was not enough finance to employ non-Egyptian IT specialists. In June 2007 a German IT specialist joined our team who serves as our consultant on the development of our electronic magazine and library. Both the electronic magazine and library are built in PHP then switched to Drupal (Joomla). Electronic Network for Arab-West Understanding launched on June 5, 2008 by HRH Prince el-Hassan bin Talal of Jordan (www.enawu.org). Your work will be used for the electronic magazine and library based on Arab-West Report (www.arabwestreport.info). We have an amazing team here in Maadi, Cairo representing a truly international and multicultural mix. Our staff come from the USA, the Netherlands, Egypt, Syria, the UK, Denmark and Germany. Job duties:
You work as directed by our German IT Services Supervisor to provide a wide range of support for IT activities, including but not limited to:
- Helping develop the new Arab-West-Report on Drupal platform and once established teaching Egyptian IT staff how to maintain this platform.
- Improving the search function in our database within a difficult environment. I.e. Arabic names can be spelled in many different ways in non-Arabic languages, including English which creates a problem in search. Standardizing names from various sources was attempted but did not work. Search needs to be able to find names almost regardless of the way they are spelled.
- Developing our subject index (see current work under advanced search on www.arabwestreport.info)
- IT support (including transliteration) for translators and other staff preparing lists, texts, documents and other materials for Arab West Report, the Electronic Archive or the ENAWU project.
- Collecting and preparing e-activity statistics (visitors to sites, results of e-campaigns, new subscribers, etc.).
- Informing the IT Services Supervisor of issues or crises that may impact network availability, publication of materials, accessibility of e-services, websites, etc.
- Other tasks as directed by the IT Services Supervisor or Editor-in-Chief.
- Completing a monthly timesheet to record work attendance and activities.

Job requirements:
- 1+ year of experience in content based web management systems (JOOMLA or Drupal preferred), with experience in PHP, MySQL, PERL and/or ASP programming.
- previous experience in securing PHP web applications is preferred.
- Commitment to follow IT advice from our German IT consultant and learn and develop new skills, particularly IT related, if needed.
- working hours: from 9 AM to 5 PM | Friday and Saturday Off.
- Fluent in English (both spoken and written)
- This position was formulated for IT personnel, regardless of nationality or gender.
- Excellent command of English Language.
- Cairo Residents Only, Maadi residents are preferred.
